What does the study and work of Podiatry involve?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Podiatry

A Podiatrist is a lower limb specialist, their main roles are:

Gait analysis (the way people walk) with a view to correcting lower limb pain through exercise programmes and orthoses (insoles). In this respect they work very closely with physiotherapists and orthotists.

Ulcer management - People who have developed open wounds on their foot due to an underlying disease process such as diabetes, vascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, or neurological conditions such as spina bifida, to name but a few causes. You’ll work closely with a variety of nursing disciplines and specialists such as vascular surgeons, microbiologists, rheumatologists and diabetologists.

Nail surgery - As a podiatrist you are qualified to use local anaesthetic up to the ankle - most commonly done procedure by a podiatrist is the removal of an ingrowing toe nail but you can treat other conitions and you can do further training to become a surgeon.

Risk assessment of the foot with regards preventing long term problems such as ulceration and amputation.

As a podiatrist you will also learn to identify other problems and refer to the relevant specialities.

There are about 9 universities across the UK that offer the course and all would be happy to show you round and give you more detail.

It is a very rewarding career.

i am having hammertoe surgery! SO NERVOUS!! but I hav a question about the recovery!?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Hammertoes

I know you have to have pins put in and im fine with that but im scared to have them removed!! is it really painful to have them removed? I am not sure if I am willing to go through the surgery if i hav to have pins taken out! i mean its just a toe that looks different! but I have heard some people say it doesnt hurt to have the pins taken out and some people say it does hurt. let me know! thanks!

Maddison, if you are willing to undergo the surgery then I wouldn’t worry about the simple removal of the pins. The procedure in most cases is unremarkable and people fret about it and then say it was really nothing. Your doctor has done many of these and knows the best way to perform this. If it upsets you don’t look or ask that a shield be put up so that you cannot see it occurring. I am sure that what you should be focusing is on what that new look is going to do for you when you get shoes!

Can bunions cause you to get extreme pain in your big toe so you may think it’s broken?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Bunions

I have a bunion on my foot and it’s very hard to walk lately because it feels like the bone(closest to my toe nail) in my big toe is about to snap like it’s broken or something.I used to get joint pain but this is different.Could my toe be fractured or is it just very bad bunion pain?

Very likely.
Bunions are often bone tissue growing beyond what we normally accept as the limits of one’s foot.
Surgery can involve having extraneous bone tissue removed.
You could carefully shop for shoes to accommodate for bunion(s).

how to get rid of arch pain?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Arch Pain

i have a collaspe arch and arch pains
i wear custom orthdoics made for my foot
im wondering what can i do to stop the pain and "uncollaspe" my arch
also can i still go to the gym to work out my legs and calves and can i jumprope too
i heard stretchin the calves work, but i still feel pain

for pain, you should probably take some pain meds
and it’ll take time to heal, so it’s probably best if you don’t excersize it too much or the healing process could be interrupted.
There are a few stretches that can help, but u’ll have to ask a physical therapist about them.

Last year I got Plantar Fasciitis in both feet, now it is healed, but why do my feet still hurt?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Plantar Fasciitis

The doctor did MRI , and said Plantar Fasciitis has healed, but I have bone spurs on both heals.

I cannot stand for long periods, or walk too far, without it hurting. My foot doctor says bone spurs would not cause them to still hurt????

Go to your doctor again and if he tries to just excuse you saying it’s not bad, tell him he doesn’t understand and don’t leave until he gets what your saying. Try painkillers if he prescribes them, and if it doesn’t work, talk to him again. If he can’t help you, find a new foot doctor, you don’t have to live with pain.

Are there any cures for heel pain?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Heel Pain

I’ve heard that cortizone shots or something like that can help cure heel pain. Any advice would be welcome.

-Back, leg & feet massages- It’s all connected, so a good back massage can help your feet.
-Decreasing shock to the heels by wearing insoles or very comfortable shoes & avoiding jogging.

Why are my toes and feet in pain during different times of the day?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Feet Pain

Last night, by toes, and the balls of my feet hurt so bad I couldn’t sleep. But when I got up in the morning, the pain went away. However, around 1pm, the pain started to come back. When I got home at 5pm, I soaked my feet in warm water, and the pain eventually went away, but came back around 7pm with the same intensity as the night before.
Last winter was the first time I had ever experienced it. It seemed to go away by itself.

Could it have something to do with the shoes you are wearing? maybe they don’t fit right or provide enough support. If this is the case it might be worth it to invest in a pair of comfort shoes. http://www.drewshoe.com has a nice selection of comfort shoes that provide addition ventilation, support, and comfort.

Hi Jackie J,

Here is some help for your back pain http://www.squidoo.com/Back_Strengthening_Exercises . It could be that your back is out of alignment and you are over compensating and resulting in foot pain. The exercises in the link should kill two birds with one stone.
