6 Strategies To Reduce Foot Pain

Do you feel burning pain in your feet? Or an uncomfortable persistent ache or pain in your soles, heels, joints or arches? If so, you may have one of the 6 most common and treatable foot complaints. Like your fingerprints your feet are unique. They have contours and curves that are often not supported by generic shoe insoles. However there are some simple things you can do to eliminate or avoid foot pain.

1. Wear shoes that fit
The key to happy feet is to get the best fitting shoes possible. While this may seem obvious, ask yourself how many pairs of shoes do you wear that cause your feet to move about in the shoe? If there is enough space to fit your finger behind your heel, then chance are you need to get a better fit. Shoes should be snug but not overly tight. It’s true that as we get older our feet can increase in size. It’s not that your feet are really growing, but over the years tendons and ligaments to tend tend to get stretched and this leads to a larger foot size. Make sure to have your feet measured when you buy new shoes. Also, don’t wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row. And finally, if you have bunions, hammer toes or a neuroma, make sure your shoes are wide enough and deep enough in the toe box.

2. Avoid shoes that constrict the natural shape of your foot.
Anytime you wear shoes that constrict the natural shape of your foot it’s likely to cause foot pain. Women’s high heels are particularly bad and can accelerate damage to tendons and ligaments and create a lot of pain, not to mention long terms damage.

By restricting the foot in a tight fitting shoe, like a pair of high heels you increase the weight on the area that is restricted. You not only crush your toes, but you are crushing them at the same time you are putting weight on them. High heels can aggravate a lot of other condition like bunions. And while high heels don’t cause bunions, they do aggravate foot pain. When the foot is pitched forward, like it is in a high heel it puts intense pressure on the bones at the base of the toe joint and intensifies the bunion pain. Choosing the right shaped shoe is critical as both the heel height and the point of the shoe affect the pressure on the foot.

3. Get custom fitted shoe inserts:
The more cushioning for your feet, the better. Many products offer shock absorption that fit into the shoes. If you are on your feet often or are a very heavy person, the inserts need to be changed at least every six months because the shocks wear out. Not only will your feet be happier, your entire body will be happier with some well-cushioned shoes. 5. Exercise your ankles, toes and feet
There are many simple exercises that can help allieviate foot pain and at the same time strengthen, stretch and relax your for your ankles, feet and toes. Some simple ones are Try toe curls by picking up objects with your toes and moving them from one pile to another. Also try standing and then rising up on your toes by lifting your heels off the ground. Do ankle pumps by moving your foot up and down. Rotating your ankle nd your feet in circles is also good. Stretch your calf muscle by doing the runner’s stretch or wall stretch. Roll the bottom of your foot on a tennis ball or golf ball.

Corrective shoes are specialty shoes designed to treat a foot abnormality. Also called orthopedic footwear, usually corrective shoes are used to treat children born with foot problems, although they can be used later in life in adults to treat foot abnormalities as well. Orthotic devices that are not built into the shoe but rather placed into the shoe can also help to correct problems and deformities of the feet.

Unusually high arches in feet can be treated in children with orthopedic shoes containing molded support with a retrocapital pad. These special additions to the shoe will help to reduce the plantar arch. In adults, the same condition can be treated using shoes with extra depth, containing molded support with a metatarsal pad that will help to relieve pressure points.

Flatfoot (medically called valgus foot) can be treated with corrective shoes containing molded support that has special correction under the navicular or talus for children.

In adults, flatfeet can be treated with shoes containing molded support with a heel stabilizer and extra depth.  A condition called false flatfoot (forefoot varus) is treated with orthopedic shoes containing a Thomas heel (a medial heel wedge), scaphoid pads for medial arch support, or a sole with a bevel.

Forefoot calluses, also called clovus, can be treated using a shoe with extra depth. Shoes containing molded support with a metatarsal pad or a retrocapital pad can also be used to treat forefoot calluses.

Bunions, or hallux valgus, can be treated with a shoe with molded support relieving bunion pressure. Shoes with modified extra depth or that are extra wide can also be used to correct this condition.

Hammer toes, also called claw toes, can be treated with orthopedic shoes containing a retrocapital pad. Heel spurs, or talagia, can be treated with molded support. Such molded support serves to help to rebalance the foot, thereby reducing pressure under the calcaneum. Extra depth shoes can also help to achieve this effect.

Frequent ankle sprains caused by ankle inversion (turning in) or reversion (turning out) can also be helped by corrective shoes. Usually the shoes used in this case are orthopedic with a balanced, flared heel. Other corrective shoes used for this condition contain molded support with a special heel cup. Uneven lower limbs can be treated using a shoe with extra depth containing a special buildup to correct unevenness, which can be adapted to a person’s gait.

Foot Deformity: Haglund’s Deformity

Foot deformity encompasses a wide range of problems. Here we are only going to look at few of those. First, we need to know that the foot is like any other limb or part of the body, packed with nerves, muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons, and blood vessels. Your feet must carry your weight plus anything you are carrying so we need to take any foot problems and deformities seriously.  Haglund’s deformity is a common deformation of the foot. This is caused by pressure placed on the back of the heel by shoes. The main sign of Haglund’s deformity is pain in the heel and a bump or knot forming just above the heel where it meets the Achilles tendon. An x-ray is not needed for the diagnosis, as it will be apparent to the eye, although an x-ray will provide information needed by the surgeon.

It will show how large the bump or calcaneus really is.  There are two ways to treat Haglund’s deformity, the first being wearing shoes that don’t put pressure on the back of the heel, i.e. shoes with no backs or simply going barefoot. By doing this you reduce the pressure which in turns reduces the swelling. Another option is surgery. With surgery the bump is removed with a small cut on the back of the heel. A portion of bone is removed to insure that the pressure does not occur again resulting in the same diagnosis.

Claw toes and hammer toes are other common deformities caused by wearing shoes. In these cases it is because of shoes not being the correct size and fit. With both conditions, pressure builds up in the toes and joints and causes pain when walking. Again, you have several options for treatment of both claw toes and hammer toes. If diagnosed early enough, purchasing a new pair of shoes that are the correct fit may correct the problems. If the condition is more advanced, surgery will be suggested. During surgery a small section of the joint of the toe is removed to relieve pressure on the tendons that keep the joint tightened.

Bunions, not something you think of when talking about deformities, but that is exactly what they are. This is caused by an abnormal knot or bump on the side of the foot continuously rubbing on the inside of a shoe. To prevent bunions from forming all you need to do is buy wider shoes that don’t cause friction with the side of the foot. Surgery may be advised, which involves simply removing the bunion from the foot.
